The Colombo Plan launches “One Child-One Tree campaign” during its 67th Anniversary

The Colombo Plan, an inter-Governmental Organization with 27 member countries launched a unique campaign, named “One Child-One tree” as a public movement to promote civil responsibilities in Environment and Climate change.

The programme was inaugurated by gifting plants to three children from various streams of schools who celebrated their birthdays with Colombo Plan during its 67th Anniversary, held in Galle Face Hotel on 29 June 2018.

Hon. Karu Jayasooriya, speaker of the Parliament, Colombo Plan Council President Ambassador Mr. Mohammed Hussain Shareef, and secretary General, Ambassador Phan Kieu Thu presented a plant each to three of the students in a glittering ceremony attended by Ministers, several Ambassadors, Diplomats and NGOs. Subsequently, the speaker also received a plant from the Colombo Plan as an Anniversary souvenir.

“One Child-One Tree” is a slogan advocated by the Colombo Plan in their member countries. For every child who is borne in to this world, the parents  will also plant one tree.  With this tradition, we expect that every child in this island will have a tree in his or her name in the years to come, said Dr. Thomas Scaria, the Coordinator of the programme.

Through this programme, school children get a plant as their birthday gift from the school Principal, which they plant and take care as a precious gift from nature. As the child grows, the plant also grows and mature into a tree. This is also an educational programme to inculcate in children a love and respect for nature.

The children received the plant as their birthday gifts during Colombo Plan Anniversary  were Zahra Mayet from Elizabeth Moir school, Suyash Wanniarachchi from St. Thomas Preparatory School and Chamindu Maldeniya from Ananda College to come to the stage.

The programme was part of the community based programmes initiated by the new Secretary General of the Colombo Plan, Ambassador Dr. Phan Kieu Thu.

During the occasion, nine students  from Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Royal College, Ananda College and St. Thomas School  received their prizes for the Inter-school art competition conducted by the Colombo Plan at Ananda College.
